The book spans musical eras, starting with an intimate description of the brutality and exploitation of Mississippi sharecropper life and the profound importance of music and song to African Americans in the deep south. From blues to gospel and the emergent genres that have defined much of the nation's - and world's - popular music in the years since. I am listening right now to the familiar tunes of the Chambers Brothers, marveling how these very vulnerable and often struggling humans formed their imprint on so many of us. The LA/ SF/ Berkeley stories are marvelous. How Owsley gave Lester two Mason jars full of LSD, inspiring him to microdose daily for several years. And finally to his recent collaborations with venture capitalist Roger McNamee and his Moonalice band. It's a good read and a reminder that we as Americans need to continually remind ourselves of both the roots of the music we love and the rapacious history of the music industry. Buy this book."
